In 1994, the World Cup was played on U.S. soil for the first time. To commemorate this historic event, the United States Mint created a selection of limited edition coins featuring the likeness of soccer players and the World Cup.
By taking the coins out of their traditional felt boxes and placing them in a non-traditional but easily recognizable CD case, sports enthusiasts were enticed to purchase these commemorative coins even if they weren't collectors. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
